Data Collection Addictions...

Data collecting can be fun. It starts innocently enough, by learning about family trees.
Somewhere along the line we branch out with more people and more information about them.
How does it happen? Is it necessary? Are there any reasons that validate this behavior as rational?

How Does It Happen?
Whether it took you a long time or a relatively short time to learn no longer matters.
What does matter is that you realize that you've succeeded, and remember how you got there.
Because that's precisely what you're going to need to continue the quest without suffering "burnout".

Deciding to collect more data is actually something of a milestone for celebration!
It marks reaching a level of comfort in areas like search, software, and other genealogy skills.
If this is happening to you-rejoice! It means you've finally got a handle on what you've set out to do!

Many nights or afternoons are spent comparing notes and dates, learning how to find lost individuals.
We've all been there, and now that we know how it's done, most of us are going back! ...Why is that?

Because we feel a reward for some very important accomplishments!
The feeling of reclaiming someone lost for the first time cannot be overstated.
It makes no difference that they lived a hundred or years before or how they were lost.
Whether because they're beneath mounds of records or on a solitary piece that proves they existed.
They're no longer forgotten, and you can show the world where they are. They've finally come home.

These are feelings that many cannot understand, so don't expect them to.
By virtue of the simple fact that you do, is enough to warrant the project continuing on.
After all, if it's not done by those who care, then who would look for the names to know they're lost?

What Does It Matter?

Because you care.
There are many other "humanitarian" reasons, family bloodlines, wills, etc.
Many are noteworthy, especially in light of past deliberate destructions of such records.

Todays world is no different than the times of 600-1600AD Africa and Europe in terms of damage.
France suffered many Atlantic/West family church record losses during religious attacks/conflicts.
The practice of the day (And still continues) was to burn records and churches after conquests.

The internet makes it possible for almost anyone to be a modern-day-hero in saving the past.
Your work, small or large can greatly impact the overall preservation of our heritage.
Isn't that the reason we've all been doing this anyway? Why stop at home?

The preservation must be made secure until someone like yourself comes to carry it forward.
Here's a "Top Five" list of ways to save your work to make it matter in the longrun.

Is All This Necessary?
Honestly, that just depends on your own goal.
As a hobby, not so much. As a career, obviously. As preservation for humanity, undoubtedly.
The bottom line is to do whatever amount you have time for and feel comfortable with.

The single most important thing you can do no matter what level...
Is to make it available to give to the next generation for them to carry on.

This months Genealogy 101 Lesson was scheduled to be in conjunction with this article.

For an idea of the types of things that go into a file, see the Family Tree Demo.
Check The Family Tree Report and The Census Report for monthly updates!

When you're ready to add the support to do your own verifying, purchase the census files on CD's.
Because verifying is the key to accuracy, and accuracy is what makes your tree valid.
Good luck, have fun and enjoy!

The L-Pages...

L-Page characters are chosen in connection with the others being added to the family tree.
This way, we see how family relationships grew, and the roles they played within their families.
As a bonus, the family tree flow-chart grows monthly without having any gaps or "orphan pages".

This months subject: Louis Lizotte 1793-1877.
Follow along every month for new stories, and be sure to add the subjects to your tree!

Newest Pages...

New page ideas are posted here whenever they're inserted.
Suggest a topic if you like!

"Projects" is a new page added to the Census CD's tab showing more ways to use the CD's!
In the future there will be pictures added to the descriptions for visualizing them as well!
For now, it's a way of helping you get more uses from the CD purchases you make!
Definitely worth a look!

"Searching" is another new page under the Census CD Tab/Section.
There seems to be a need for some initial instructions on how to use the CD's.
It explains the basic differences between a database search and a search for documents.
Worth the two minutes of reading so you understand!

"Research"
is a complete section of its own, and presently has several exciting new pages emerging.
These topics are related to any family tree, and should be of use while researching your ancestry.
They are investigation spin-offs, ongoing and under construction, but noteworthy of mention.
