Genealogy 101 Lessons-Software Updates & Upgrades-When It's Time

Software Updates & Upgrades-When It's Time   Published Monthly
Lesson 062...                                                                                                            2020 12 31

Defining The Problem...
Software is a collection of commands coded for a specific operating system to interpret and execute.
It may have inherrent issues from the start, when the OS advances, or lack newer features.

If updates/upgrades are necessary because of major OS changes, then choice may not be an option.
Problems of not updating can range from slow running to full system crashing.

There's also the "Just because I can" reasoning, which can hurt or help depending on further choices.
Having the ability to perform a successful upgrade is far more in-depth than simple mouseclicks.

We don't always see the potential problems that may accompany what we envision as "A better way".
Any overlooked items can begin to surface in anywhere from a few moments to a few weeks.
Whether simply bothersome or full blown failure, each issue has to be navigated.

Times to avoid for performing updates or upgrades are when there's little time or high financial costs.
Having the newest software is like having a streetrod - You'll spend some time working on it.
Most importantly, (If possible) never "upgrade" software to a version of "x.0.xx".

How Did That Happen?...
Comfort is a wonderful thing. It makes us feel like all is well and that we are in control of our lives.
Yet the world is always changing, evolving and "advancing" whether we want it to or not.
Regardless of our feeling about the changes, eventually we must concede.

Over time, updates by familiarity with OS and other software programs, can become second nature.
Most do not affect many users directly, and those that do are usually a positive expierience.
Updates tend to improve internal codes, or enhance the existing or new features.

The most critical reasons for upgrading are of course operating system and security advancements.
OS/Security update needs happen monthly with good reasons, but they are not infallible.
Breech and compatibility issues are constantly being re-written.

One pitfall is that sometimes the terms update and upgrade are wrongly used to describe the actions.
Using these words loosely for too long can blur their meanings with the user in for a surprise!
Computers are extremely exact in their commands, and will obey you without question.

What Can We Do To Fix This?...
First, it's important to understand the difference between an update and an upgrade.
Although sometimes seeming similar, they're both very different from one another in the longrun.

Updates (Version Ex: x.x.3) usually contain minor fixes to problems found in previous versions.
These are continuances of the current version in an effort to smooth or maintain efficiency.
Stronger (Version Ex: x.2.x) changes are necessary for OS changes or feature addons.

Upgrades (Version Ex: 2.x.x) are usually distributed when several addons/features are enhanced.
The first digit is indicative of major changes including OS changes, graphics and more.
The second digit is used for new addons, features and enhancements.

Feeling comfortable has a lot to do with our ability at a certain level within a given task.
If the software has been installed recently (Or is still new to us), updates are a better choice.
We should become as familiar as possible with the basic version before attempting anything larger.

The goal is to have as smooth transition from one level to the next as is possible.
Updates in general do not pose issues, as most are code fixes and not noticed by users.
Upgrades however can change everything from OS needs to features, and change the entire look.

Where Can We Find These Updates And Upgrades?...
Specific locations within each program vary by brand.
Updates can usually be set to download automatically at various intervals.
Upgrades are usually listed at the brands website, possibly in several OS Platforms.

It's equally as important to know when to update and upgrade.
Many softwares post monthly updates until a new version becomes available.
Additionally, it can be helpful if the brand shows a list of items addressed by the updates.

Defining when to upgrade is not as simple - Always create a backup first!!
The cutting edge of technology may seem like greener grass, but it has a heavy price.
Newest versions are almost always prototypes with only a few of its major issues resolved.

Most users  would do well to wait for a version that has resolved its major issues (Example: x.1.x).
Beware of any brands that have a habit of creating new versions several times each year.
Good software development has regular updates and upgrades when needed.

What Did We Learn From This?...
Updates and upgrades are two very different actions with very different results.
Knowing the difference beforehand can prevent an un-necessary hardship.

Backups are equally important and are an important part of updates and upgrades.
Any mishap that occurs can result in a significant loss of your data.
Make a backup each time you close the software.

Updates are relatively easy to do and should be performed regulary for several reasons.
They can help resolve many problematic issues and enhance existing features.
New features may be basic as updates, but improved in upgrades.

Upgrades are shipped/published without extensive testing.
Genealogy software is extremely large, and testing each section takes time.
It's largely tended to and fixed after user "Bug Reports" detail a need (Doesn't take very long).

These are fairly common actions that users should not be afraid to perform.
Approaching them in a deliberate and logical order can help build confidence with repition.
Allow yourself significant time to perform the task, restarts and controls adjustments before starting.

The Basic Rules...
First...
Make a backup as the initial part of the update or upgrade.
At the very least, set software controls to make backups at closing.

Second...
Perform updates monthly on both OS and software in a systematic fashion.
Update the operating system first so the software fully updates. Restart after each.

Third...
Avoid new version levels until after their first update when fixes and improvements are posted.
When installing a newer version, allow time to make adjustments to the look and feel for familiarity.

As always...
What you'll choose to do with this information is up to you.
It will at least serve as a stepping stone for further knowledge.
You should be applauded for your willingness to educate yourself.

These are only basic guidelines, and can always be adjusted to suit your personal needs or budget.
Hopefully the knowledge gained here will help you to be better positioned as a family historian!
